Nestled in Chile’s Atacama Desert, the Residencia is a futuristic living complex designed for astronomers working at the European Southern Observatory’s Paranal site. Though it served as a backdrop in the 2008 James Bond film *Quantum of Solace*, its real purpose is far from fiction: it supports scientists operating the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and building the future Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). The building blends into the desert landscape with a hidden entrance and a design focused on minimizing light pollution, crucial for clear astronomical observations.

The Residencia features a lush central atrium under a translucent dome, complete with a swimming pool and tropical plants — a stark contrast to the arid, high-altitude desert outside. At over 2,000 meters above sea level, the site enforces strict rules: no alcohol due to dehydration risks, limited outdoor exercise, and mandatory ground-directed torch use at night. These measures protect both human health and the integrity of night-sky observations.

Astronomers cycle between day and night shifts, maintaining the VLT by day and conducting deep-space observations at night. The area’s exceptionally dark, dry atmosphere makes it one of the best ground-based astronomy sites on Earth. Residents witness stunning celestial displays, including the Magellanic Clouds and satellite trains, while lasers from the VLT pierce the sky to guide observations of distant cosmic objects.
