Despite appeals and a complaint threat to FIFA, US officials have maintained the protocol, citing security assessments. The team played their opening group match against New Zealand in Los Angeles and had to depart within hours, missing a night’s rest for recovery.

The restrictions apply equally to their upcoming match against Belgium, also in Los Angeles. While the US confirmed all players and coaches received visas, some Iranian team officials were denied entry due to unspecified derogatory information. Mehdi Torabi, a winger, had his visa expire post-match but was issued a new multiple-entry visa in time for future games.

Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House Task Force for the tournament, said the situation remains dynamic, with discussions expected after the Belgium match to determine arrangements for Iran’s third game against Egypt in Seattle. The US insists the current measures balance hospitality and security, noting no credible threats have been identified so far. Moving Iran’s base from Tucson to Tijuana has reduced travel time to Los Angeles by an hour, which officials say improves logistics.
